San Gabriel San Gabriel is also known as "Chan Gabriel" because its population is about 61% Asian-American, mostly Chinese and Taiwanese (with many Vietnamese too). Since the city of Los Angeles to the west was founded by a group of San Gabriel residents, it's sometimes referred to as "The Birthplace of LA."
